Solution for the Plastic Garbage in the Ocean!

This young man’s idea is such a very exciting solution for the heaps of plastic garbage that are circulating in the ocean!  It is also an excellent illustration of one of my favorite TED talks about the concept of “frugal innovation” which in a nutshell means to “use that which is in ample supply to create more of that which is in short supply.” In this case the ocean currents are in ample supply to provide the power needed to clean-up the ocean which is in short supply. Other solutions to the 5 gyres problem have been calculated at solving the problem in thousands of years. This new idea could potentially clean-up the ocean in as little as 5-years.  HOLY MOLY Batman, that’s a heck of a lot faster than THOUSANDS of years. How’s that for good news???!!!! I think I’m going to go crack open a bottle of wine and celebrate.

If you are new to this issue, here is a great 2-minute video explaining.

Check out my previous posts to learn more about this serious issue that is contaminating fisheries in Maine.  I wrote this one about toothpaste and this one about face and body products. Be sure to avoid ANY PRODUCT that lists POLYETHYLENE as an ingredient. Here is a list of some products that contain the microbeads:\
