I had the most amazing vegan Vietnamese at tofu factory/restaurant Vinh Loi Tofu, for more on my visit go to green-and-greener.blogspot.com

So I’d been having an UDON craving, and unfortunately, most of the restaurants that do udon near me are Japanese BBQ restaurants and even if they’ll make the udon vegetarian for me I prefer not to eat it with the smell of BBQ all around me.  Fortunately, when I went to YELP the highest rated udon place in the area (4.5 stars with 114 reviews) happened to be a vegan place (what a nice surprise!)  We actually don’t eat a lot of tofu since we try to eat mostly raw and as minimally processed foods as possible, but if you are into your fake meats, than this is the place for you!  Vinh Loi is also open in that they only use certified no-GMO soy and no MSG in their food.  The faux BBQ duck was my favorite and the “House Special Fried Rice” with faux BBQ duck, scallops and sausage was out of control good.  The fake beef and chicken were too realistic looking for me so I skipped around those.  All four dishes we had were fantastic and the soft warm tofu pudding covered with coconut milk was definitely a decadent cherry on the top of our vegan dinner sundae.  Owner Kevin Tran is awesome and super friendly.  You really don’t even have to order…he’ll do it for you if you’re new to vegan or Vietnamese food.  18625 Sherman Way #101 (strip mall on the north side of the street) in Reseda, CA.

Announcing a new Meetup for SFV Environment & Animal Lovers’ Singles Meetup Group!

What: Vegan Pizza Party

When: September 26, 2009 6:30 PM

Where:
ZPizza
20040 1/2 Ventura Boulevard
Woodland Hills, CA 91364

While I have been vegan for close to a quarter of a century and I deeply believe in this life life I’ve chosen, one thing I have found greatly lacking is REAL ‘CHEESE’ PIZZA THAT IS VEGAN – well, the time’s they are a changin’ – REAL ‘CHEESE PIZZA’ THAT IS VEGAN IS HERE – (although, yes, it should be noted that the original pizzas in Italy did not have cheese anyway!) – well, after about a quarter of a century of doing without what I would consider a real ‘cheese’ pizza like I was accustomed to as a child, I am thrilled that ‘cheese’ pizza is now available vegan in Woodland Hills – ZPizza at 20040 1/2 Ventura Boulevard – at the Natural Products Expo last March, I was very excited when I tried a new vegan cheese from Canada – Daiya – not even made from soy but rather from cassava root – that was the first vegan cheese I’ve had that really did it for me – the pizza they made with it was like real cheese pizza – it pulled, goo’ed, and oozed like on a real cheese pizza – ZPizza is now, just as of Thursday according to a voice message I received from the manager on Wednesday evening, offering this cheese as an option on their pizzas – ZPizza also already offers a wholewheat crust option, (as well as a gluten-free crust option), and they feature a certified organic pizza sauce – I thank the manager of this pizza parlor for offering such options – I would like to thank ZPizza for such offering, and I would like to show them that they will get business for such options – thus, I am planning my first PIZZA PARTY, and YOU’RE INVITED – please try to meet me at ZPizza at 20040 1/2 Ventura Boulevard on the 16th at 8:30pm – whether you can or can’t make it then, please do also try to get over there on your own, and tell others, to try the amazing Daiya cheese and to thank them for carrying it! – feel free to tell them that Andy Mars sent you, as I promised them I’d try to spread the word around the community and, afterall, I’ve been actively encouraging them to carry the Daiya –

Food Forward is adding a second day of fruit picking this weekend in Montecito.  For more info visit http://green-and-greener.blogspot.com

FROM FOOD FORWARD:

We are happy to say we are almost full for FRUITSTOCK this Saturday in Montecito – a lush 150 tree orchard awaits us!

We are so happy in fact, that in the spirit of Woodstock, we have added a second day to our end of summer fruit harvesting celebration.  No mud or hippies, well maybe a few hippies….

The second day, Sunday the 30th will be in Moorpark on a 40+ acre citrus & avocado ranch.  We will be meeting here for a few hours Sunday morning (10AM to noonish) to help bag an insane grapefruit crop which has been donated to us – the trick being we must bag everything we can take Sunday or else it will be trashed.  Yes, trashed! Last weekend 4 of us bagged over 4000 lbs (no picking required!) here – all which went to feed LAs hungry.

If you can join us at this special event – about 30 minutes from the Valley in beautiful farm country, we’d love to have you.  Kids welcome! Please  EM to confirm and get address/details

Otherwise, we have about 4-5 spots left for Saturday (light lunch provided by FF, and potluck BBQ following the pick)

Hope to see you this weekend.

Best,

Rick Nahmias
