Recipe: Cinnamon Danish

What’s on my mind? DANISH. MUST. MAKE. DANISH. I caught Martha Stewart making this delicacy on CreateTV during a workout, and I haven’t been able to stop thinking about it! For those of you who know my blog, you might be surprised I’m posting this recipe, but I love my weekly treats. Our family eats super healthy 90% of the time and 10% of the time we eat what we want. We’ve taught our child the difference between “growing food” and “treats” and we feel she has a healthy relationship with food because we don’t make anything completely off-limits. Also, I’m all about COOKING FROM SCRATCH, and so although this food might have sugar and refined flour, it won’t have artificial colors, artificial flavors nor preservatives which makes it much healthier than something bought in the store. Plus, baking is always a great opportunity to introduce chemistry in a dynamic way, as my child always helps out with the cooking.

Here is the recipe:
I can’t wait for the weekend to throw down this recipe! Usually we have pizza on the weekend as our refined-grain meal of the week, but we’ll be trading that in this weekend for this delicious monstrosity. Thanks Martha!

Homeschool Summer Plan

For the record, I’m not a “traditional” homeschooler. I don’t prepare lesson plans, and I don’t homeschool alone. My version of homeschooling functions like a coop, where a group of families get together, at the same place everyday with the same children everyday and often with teachers present. The 1-adult to 4-children ratio allows for the individualized attention that I desire for my child, and the like-minded families create a real sense of community and safety on those days when I drop-off my child. Also, I’m definitely more of an “unschooler” in terms of philosophy.

So this is what our summer is shaping up to look like within our homeschool/coop-hybrid group. Hope you find this helpful, be a spark in the world!

Monday: an outing of some sort, most of the summer we’ll be going to the Holllywood Bowl “Summer Sounds” concerts which includes an hour-long concert and an hour-long craft. Each week is a different country and we are letting these concerts give shape to the rest of our week: http://www.hollywoodbowl.com/tickets/summersounds-2016  During the weeks when the Hollywood Bowl isn’t in session, we’ll be visiting local museums, gardens or libraries to kick off our week.

Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday: from 10:30-2:30 our group will meet and do crafts, make food and watch YouTube videos (with lots of time for free play too) about the culture depicted at the concert on Monday.

Friday: We’ll go to a restaurant that makes food from the region we’ve been studying and then end the week with a bowling session at our local Kids Bowl Free bowling alley. This program takes place all over the country and for $30/per-family FOR THE WHOLE SUMMER you get 2-games per family member and adults pay for shoe rentals. That pays for itself with one-visit!!!! See if there is a participating bowling alley in your area! http://www.kidsbowlfree.com/
